Nomenclature The variety was described by Hyatt from Florida, approximate coordinates 26.495915°N 82.725098°W (syntype MCZ PORa-7331). Hyatt (1877: 534) referred S. d. var. mollior to Schmidt’s Cacospongia mollior with question mark. The localities for this variety are Florida and Fernando do Noronha (Brazil, but this latter specimen is not listed as present on the online database of MCZ), making the conspecificity with the Mediterranean species Cacospongia mollior Schmidt, 1862 unlikely. Without images and more precise description this combination is incertae sedis. It likely belongs to genus Dysidea and I propose to assign it to the combination Dysidea mollior (Hyatt, 1877) as a taxon inquirendum. [details]
