The species was recently found on Japanese Tsunami Marine Debris (JTMD) that washed ashore in Oregon, Washington. Haliclona xena has long been regarded as non-native in western Europe, yet of unknown provenance (de Weerdt 1986; van Soest et al. 2007, 2012). The appearance in a dock originating from the Port of Misawa (Japan), is the first report of H. xena outside of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.
