Depth range 10-1000 m. [details]
Distribution Southern Ocean. Widespread on both sides of the Antarctic Peninsula: Weddell Sea, Larsen Ice Shelf area, Prince Gustac Channel; Elephant Island, South Shetland Islands (45-1000 m). Bellingshausen Sea (about 500 m). Ross Sea: Terra Nova Bay (320-670 m); off Daniell Peninsula, north of McMurdo (567-578 m). East Antarctica, Wilkes Land, O'Brien Bay (10-25 m). [details]
Etymology The specific epithet australis is the Latin word for 'southern', and refers to the distribution of the species, known only from the Southern Hemisphere. [details]

Individual sperm with a short oval nucleus, a middle piece consisting of 2-4 smaller spherical structures that are likely mitochondria, and a long tail or flagellum. Development of post-larvae and juveniles described by Blake (2015: 70-71, figs. 4-5). [details]
