Nomenclature Jouin (1992) instigated Parenterodrilus as a replacement name for Astomus Jouin, 1979, which she indicated was a homonym, junior to Astomus Agassiz, 1845. However Astomus in Agassiz's Nomenclatoris Zoologici listing (p.38 in the Index Universalis) is doubtfully one of Agassiz's many 'improved' spellings, in this case for the available name Atomus Latreille 1795*. Agassiz's work is a list of names, not of taxa. His alternate spellings, regarded as at most incorrect spellings, have no validity (opinions may vary on this), and do not enter into evaluation for homonymy (ICZN art.54.3). In this particular case of 'Atomus' it is unclear that Agassiz was recommending an alternate 'improved' spelling (In the main genus listing there is Atomus with its etymology, preceded 3 entries above by "Astomus vid. Atomus. In index universalis p.40 there is a Atomus listing with V (vide = see) Astomus, and on p.38 there is a Astomus listing with "(scr Atomus Latr)".). These entries appear contradictory, and "scr Atomus" means 'write as Atomus'. Astomus Jouin is therefore unchallenged in priority by a mere mention of 'Astomus' as a possible alternate name spelling in Agassiz's listings, and cannot be replaced. However, if subsequently adopted by a later author as a valid name for Latreille's arachnid mite genus, the priority of Astomus for homonymy would date from that adoption. Apparently no later usage exists. The original spelling Atomus for the mite was the one still in use in 1917 (In H. E. Ewing, Bull. Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist.).
