Etymology The specific epithet violaceoflava refers to the color of the species, with the anterior region of the worm being dark violet (violaceo) and the posterior region yellow (flava). [details]

Synonymy The species is a possible synonym of Haplosyllis uncinigera (Grube, 1878), according to Lattig & Martin (2009). [details]
Taxonomy Current taxon synonym of species listed. The species was first synonymized with Haplosyllis spongicola (Grube, 1855) by Willey (1905: 269), and posteriorly with H. djiboutiensis Gravier, 1900 by Augener (1913: 213). Lattig & Martin (2009) regarded the species as being similar to H. uncinigera (Grube, 1878) in some aspects, but in the absence of type material considered it to be incertae sedis. [details]
