Type locality Kattegat, Denmark, Isefjord, Vellerup Vig (geocoordinates estimated as lat. 55.735º, long. 11.865º). According to Hartman (1959: 271) the type locality is "Ireland". The species was described with base on specimens from three different localities: 1) Irish Sea, Ireland, Malahide Inlet (geocoordinates estimated as lat. 53.453º, long. -6.148º); 2) Kattegat, Denmark, Isefjord, Vellerup Vig (geocoordinates estimated as lat. 55.735º, long. 11.865º); 3) Kattegat, Denmark, Roskildefjord, Frederikssund (geocoordinates estimated as lat. 55.839º, long. 12.043º). While it is clear from the original description that specimens from the three localities were used for the description of the species, type material and a type locality were not designated in the publication. However there are several specimens deposited at the NMHUK (1955.10.4.1-4) designated collectively as "TYPE", and collected at "Vellerup Vig, in fine gray sand and clay, 30-40 cm depth" by R.I. Smith. This way, this location should be considered as being the type locality.  [details]

Dublin, Ireland, 13 December 1935), biologist and naturalist first at the Natural History Museum, Dublin, and later at the Fisheries Branch of the Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction (antecedent of the Fisheries Research Centre of the Irish Department of the Marine), and "whose work on the Annelida is universally recognised" (Abdel-Moez & Humphries, 1955: 153).  [details]

Depth range Intertidal to subtidal in shallow water (30-40 cm depth).  [details]

Distribution Northeast Atlantic Ocean: Irish Sea (Malahide Inlet, Ireland); Kattegat (Isefjord and Roskildefjord, both at Denmark).  [details]

Etymology The species is named after Rowland Southern (b. Adlington, Lancashire, UK, 1882 - d. [details]

Habitat Estuarine conditions, in shallow water. At Malahide Inlet (Ireland) the adults were found in large number (up to 300 per square meter) subtidally in shallow water, in fine, muddy gray sand and clay, while the juveniles were found intertidally at different levels, either in fine sand or in an admixture of gravel and sand lying on a layer of estuarine mud. At Isefjord (Denmark) the species did not extend into the brackish regions, where Hediste diversicolor (O.F. Müller, 1776) were abundant, but it was spreading gradually in the whole region, at the expense of this latter species (Abdel-Moez & Humpries, 1955: 147).  [details]

Reproduction Heteronereids found swarming from March to April, at Malahide Inlet (Ireland).  [details]

Synonymy The species was considered as a synonymy of Alitta virens (M. Sars, 1853) by various authors (e.g.: Hartman, 1959; Pettibone, 1963; Chambers & Garwood, 1992). Khlebovich et al. (1980) showed that it was a different species from A. virens and a junior synonym of Allita grandis (Stimpson, 1853). See also Khlebovich (1996: 112-113).  [details]

Taxonomy Current taxon junior synonym of species listed. [details]
