Nomenclature Aphrodita nitens Linnaeus 1746 cannot be an available name under ICZN Article 3.2, as it is pre-1758. For unknown reasons Linnaeus (1758: 655, 10th edition of Systema Naturae) discontinued the name, placing it as a synonym of Aphrodita aculeata. In the 2nd (1761) edition of Fauna Suecica, first published 1746, Linnaeus again mentions that Aphrodita nitens is a synonym of Aphrodita aculeata. Much later Johnston (1865) includes Aphrodita nitens in a long synonymy for A. aculeata. The Hartman catalogue correctly records the species in Aphrodita as "nitens Linnaeus, 1746 (1746, p. 367).
