Spelling Lamarck (1818: 366) clearly used the ligature œ, not the ligature æ, and DeFrance (1827) clearly did also when he created Rotularia spirulœa. If the ligature is removed as required by the Code, the species epithet becomes spiruloea, as in this record. However, for unknown reasons, overwhelmingly prevailing usage in the fossil literature is to spell the binominal as Serpula spirulaea, and Rotularia spirulaea [details]From other sources
