Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorEtymology Bosc described the tube of Serpula hexagona as "montrant la moitié d'un prisme hexagone …", and the name is a New Latin adjectival form for six-sided modified from Greek. [details]

Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorStatus Zibrowius (1971:699) states that Serpula hexagona is indeterminable and does not match Hydroides dianthus, but that some recent usages were probably instead H. dianthus.
Serpula hexagona is a candidate nomen oblitum, but as Hydroides hexagona has probably been used since 1899 this status may be difficult to apply. Hartman (1945:48) records three usages, probably not occurring in formal taxonomy. There are also usages up to 1957 as H. hexagonus in the book "Methods for obtaining and handling marine eggs and embryos" D.P. Costello et al [details]
