Type locality Cannes, Côte d'Azur, France, Mediterranean Sea. Specimens were collected at three different points: 1) Pointe de la Croisette (gazetteer estimate 43.534°, 07.038°), among tubes of Sabellaria alveolata (Linnaeus, 1767); 2) northern side of Île de Sainte-Margueritte (gazetteer estimate 43.523°, 07.038°), among Lithothamnion; and 3) off La Bocca (gazetteer estimate 43.534°, 06.986°), 70 m deep among calcareous stones. Apparently Saint-Joseph (1906) did not designate a specific type locality, and while Pleijel & Mackie (1993) state to have revised the holotype (no MNHN collection code provided), Solís-Weiss et al. (2004) refer the existence of at least two syntypes (MNHN POLY TYPE 205 and 987). [details]

Their only doubt concerning the synonymy was related to Saint-Joseph's decription of eggs with a diameter of 400 µm in an animal 480 µm wide including cirri, while N. pusilla has eggs with a diameter of 150 µm.
