Etymology Not stated. The generic name is composed by the Latin noun spino, form of spinus and meaning 'thorn', and the Latin noun sphaera, meaning 'sphere', 'ball', or 'globe', and presumably refers to the shape of the long chaetae, described as being 'spindled at the base, and surrounded by thorns' (''An der Basis sind die Spitzen spindelförmig angeschwellt und ringsum mit Dornen besetzt''; Hessle, 1917). [details]

Classification Spinosphaeraa was included in tribe Terebellini by Stiller et al (2020). Previously Holthe (1986) had not been able to place it in a tribe. [details]

Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Hessle (1917: 207-209): ''Kiemen fehlen.
