Nomenclature Erected in Mollusca for Anatomus indicus Montfort. It is difficult to ascertain what Montfort was describing, but it is not obviously a polychaete (Montfort in translation "in all respects it can not be counted among the annelid worms") Nevertheless this genus name appears to first enter Polychaeta nomenclature as a synonym of genus Spirorbis Daudin, fide Mörch (1863:428). This placement was reported, but tagged questionable by Hartman (1959). Recently ten Hove & Kupriyanova (2009) placed the genus as invalid, at least in Polychaeta, and referred it to Scissurellidae. However, it is regarded as belonging in spirorbins again by Geiger (2012). Polychaeta Nomen dubium. Nomenclature Half a century subsequent to Montfort's publication Adams (1862) erected six new species in Mollusca under "Anatomus H. & A. Adams", stating that "By common consent, the somewhat mythical Anatomus of Denys de Montfort has been ignored. His name Anatomus, however, a very significant and good one, may still be used for those species of Scissurella in which the margin of the outer lip is fissured. Woodward has unnecessarily suggested the alteration Anatoma, for the sake, possibly, of the feminine termination." Thus Adams was not creating taxa under Anatomus Montfort, and the original names of the species of "Anatomus" of Adams belong in Mollusca, not Polychaeta. See Anatomus A.
