Etymology Not stated. The name of the genus Loandalia seems to be formed by the toponym 'Loanda', former name of 'Luanda', capital of Angola (West Africa), followed by the Latin suffix -alia, used to form adjectives of relationship from nouns or numerals, and would mean 'from Luanda', making reference to the type locality of Loandalia aberrans, first collected off Luanda.
