Spelling Original spelling (Costa, 1841) was both as 'Lophiocephala' at first introduction in the text heading and later without the 'i' as Lophocephala in the binominal 'Lophocephala edwardsii', in the figure caption. We don't know which was the mistake, but as Lophiocephala is the name as introduced, it could be considered the most authoritative spelling. Also the Nomenclator Zoologicus shows that 'Lophocephala' Costa, 1841 would be unavailable as a junior homonym to Lophocephala de Laporte, 1832 (Hemiptera) but senior to Lophocephala Blanchard, 1851 (Coleoptera, replaced by Myelobius Kuschel, 1986). Hartman catalogue records the correct 'Lophiocephala' as a variant spelling but her heading uses the incorrect spelling of 'Lophocephalus', perhaps influenced by the further variant spelling of 'Lophiocephalus' Quatrefages (1866: 484) had used for the two species (L. edwardsii and L. grandis) he reported for Lophiocephala. Also Costa himself (1861: 32) had used the third spelling of Lophiocephalus in a listing of museum specimens. Finally Grube (1877: 64) in text flow creates 'Loophiocephalus', but this is a clear lapsus (noted by Nomenclator Zoologicus), and to be ignored. [details]
