Diagnosis Thorax with 18 or 19 segments; one anterior asetigerous segment present; first setiger with notopodia only. Up to segment 17 or 18 capillary setae only; segments 18 and 19 transitional with notopodial setae and neuropodia with mixed hooks and setae. Palmetely branched branchiae in posterior segments. Etymology Not stated by the author. The name of the genus seems to be composed by the Greek prefix a-, meaning 'not' or 'without' but also used to express negation, and the name of the genus Notomastus M. Sars, 1851, and aims, perhaps, to highlight the differences between the two genera. [details]
