Status Type and only original specimen is lost. Zhang & Hutchings (2021: 90) suggest that Petta assimilis is indeterminate until further nearby material is obtained. They suggest the distant Cape Horn records of Hartman (1967) for Petta assimilis are unlikely to be the same species. [details]
Type locality West of Iles Crozet, -46.2667, 48.45°, 2926 m. McIntosh states the location is between Prince Edward and Kerguelen Islands, and Zhang & Hutchings (2021) repeat this, but the geolocation McIntosh gives is close to Iles Crozet. Petta assimilis was collected west of the Iles Crozet group. The species has no association with the farther east Kerguelen Islands group. [details]
Type specimen Zhang et al (2019: 312) report that Muir reported to them that the Natural History Museum, London holotype and only specimen is lost. They do not give the register alphanumeric, but it is 1885.12.1.312. [details]
