Depth range Not stated, but quite probably shallow depths. Moore (1907: 197) points that the species was collected at the bottom of the deepest part of the Eel Pond at Woods Hole. The "Atlantic Boating Almanac. 2004. Cape Cod, MA to Sandy Hook, NJ" (P.L. Griffes (Ed.). 2004. Boxell's Chandlery, Annapolis, MD, USA. 174 pp.), states that "Eel Pond, an extension of Great Harbor to the NE, is a basin with depths of 10 to 20'. In August 1981, the narrow entrance to the pond had a reported controlling depth of 8'." This way, the depth range of the species in its type locality could be of about 10-20 feet (3-6 m).  [details]

Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet heterobranchia is composed by the Greek prefix hetero-, meaning 'different', 'other' or 'another', and the Latin noun of Greek origin branchia, meaning 'gill', and refers probably to the different types of branchiae present in the species, with the 1st and 5th pair being covered with numerous digitiform pinnules, the 2nd and 3rd pairs being smooth, and the 4rd pair being intermediate between the two forms, bearing only a few processes.  [details]
