Etymology Not stated, but the type locality was Bogue Sound, near Beaufort, North Carolina. Hartman added an 'a' so made the name feminine, and she used a feminine species-name ending for the species. The origin of the geographic name is unknown, and there is evidently no historic person with family name of Bogue that would be a strong candidate for the naming honour.  [details]

Classification Although (with hindsight) Boguea clearly looks like a Rhodininae maldanid, Hartman initially placed it in Oweniidae, with affinities to Myriochele, which seems strange. Perhaps she considered the avicular uncini were like the arrays of uncini in Owenia. Later Hartman & Fauchald placed it in its own family, but currently it is in Rhodininae (fide de Assis et al, 2011) [details]
