This is a list of polychaetes recorded from the coasts of New Zealand, Chatham, Auckland, and Campbell Islands together with a historical account of previous descriptions of New Zealand material. Under each species is given a list of recorded localities and all references that have a bearing on New Zealand species.
From Introduction: This paper was originally planned as a joint paper by the author and the late Sir William Benham, who unfortunately died before the work was completed. The author was thus deprived of the help of one who, in spite of his ninety years, was able to throw light on many problems and who had such a thorough knowledge of the relevant literature. When Benham arrived in New Zealand in 1898, having just completed the section on Polychaetes in the Cambridge Natural History, he proceeded to examine the Polychaete collections in the Otago and Canterbury museums. He also collected extensively on various parts of the coast of the South Island. The full descriptions and detailed drawings of these worms fill nine large volumes which he intended to publish in the form of a memoir on New Zealand Polychaetes. However, with the appearance in 1904 of a monograph on New Zealand Annelids by Ehlers of Göttingen, Benham apparently decided to abandon this project, and handed over to Ehlers his material for identification and inclusion in a further monograph in 1907. From that time Benham's work on Polychaetes was concerned mainly with examining and reporting on collections of worms from expeditions on the coasts of New Zealand, Australia, the Sub-Antarctic islands, and Antarctica. In 1930 he drafted a complete list of New Zealand Polychaetes with their synonyms and localities, and this forms the basis of the present paper.
