Description: Colour in life: variable either grey shields with radiating wavy pattern on disc, radial shields with black petaloid pattern, arm spines with longitudinal dark stripe on one side or basically yellow with details as in Sloan et al. (1979). Humphreys, 1981. Description: arm length to 20 cm, disc diameter to 20 mm. One of the largest species in the region. Disc smooth with dark, wavy lines on golden yellow. Arms golden with long, off-white spines and conspicuous club-like spines at at regular intervals.
In Tortonese (1980): disc without spines or very few; oral shields oval; four oral papillae; three arm spines, rarely two, 4-5 rounded tubercles on the tip, length at least 3 times the segment length, with a longitudinal brown line; two tentacle scales, only one on the distal third of the arms; dorsal arm plates broader than long, distal edge straight or slightly concave; ventral arm plates rectangular; disc brown with a pattern of blackish-brown lines; two darker lines start ar the base of each arm and converge towards the centre of the disc; some brown lines on the interradial areas ventrally;a median brown line runs along the dorsal side of the arms.
Habitat: middle eulittoral and shallow lagoons, often on sand and rublle.
General distribution: Tropical Indo-Pacific in Kalk (1958); western Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Philippines (Tortonese (1980) and Clark & Rowe (1971)). [details]
