Nomenclature: It was unclear if Euryale should be assigned to Oken, 1815 or Lamarck, 1816. Oken (1815) has been suppressed for nomenclatural purposes by the ICZN, but other names from that work have been ruled available under the plenary power of the ICZN. No such ruling exists for Euryale, which assigns it to Lamarck instead.
Fleming (1828) did not give any reason for preferring Astrophyton to Euryale other than that he gives preference to Linck's old name. It is thus not clear if Fleming was aware of the homonymy of Euryale. The type species of Astrophyton A. muricatum is a gorgonocephalid though and thus the genus Astrophyton can not be used for euryalid species.
The cnidarian genus Euryale has not been in use since its original description. Its type appears to be Euryale antarctica, but no species by that name seems to exist today. The matter has been resolved by Stöhr (2011) and precedence of the ophiuroid name Euryale has been established.
