Description Colour in life: ranging from uniform light orange to uniform blood-red to disc blood-red with arms distally banded with yellow (Sloan et al., 1979. Description: Arm length to 10 cm. Dorsal surface of the disc smooth. Arms cylindrical with dorsal plates reduced, embedded in naked skin. Colour bright red with pale bands on arms. Habitat: lower eulittoral and shallow reefs.
Also recoreded in Ceylon, Bay of Bengal, East Indies, north Australia, Philippine, China, south Japan and South Pacific Is. (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Lakshadweep (India) in Sastry (1991); possibly circumaustralian although not recorded from Gulf of Carpentaria or north (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
General distribution: Indo-west Pacific Ocean, depth range 183-1006 m. (Rowe & Gates, 1995); from East Africa to Polynesia (Tortonese, 1980); Indo-Pacific (Richmond, 1998); East coast of Africa to western Pacific Ocean (Sastry, 1991).
Ecology: benthic, inshore, continental shelf, continental slope (Rowe & Gates, 1995). [details]
