"It has been suggested that Scolopendra (Greek σκολόπενδρα) derives from σκόλοψ (“pointed”,” sharp”) and έντερα (“guts” and, by extension, “earthworm”) literally “biting earthworms”" (Guasparri 2000 as cited in Barber 2014).
