Notes  Classification: When originally discovered in the 1800s, many pterobranchs were initially classified as bryozoans or other organisms.  [details]

Distribution: Many pterobranch species have been found in Antarctic regions and colder waters, but they have also been found in warmer waters at lower latitudes. [details]

Fossil range: Early Cambrian - Recent. A recent fossil find now places hemichordates in the early Cambrian. [details]

Nomenclature: The vernaculars "pterobranchs" and "sea angels" are commonly used to collectively refer to extant Cephalodiscus and Rhabdopleura, while the vernacular "graptolites" is commonly used to collectively refer to all the extinct species in this class. [details]
