Description Thallus dull blue-green to blackish-green. Trichomes ± straight, long, brightblue-green, sometimes olive-green, grey-green to yellow-green, very rarely brown-red or yellowish (?), (3.8) 4-6 (6.5) pm wide, intensely motile with oscillation and clockwise rotation, slightly or sometimes not (with the exception of the cells at the ends) constricted at the usually finely granulated, sometimes ungranulated cross-walls, slightly attenuated at the ends and bent. Sheaths thin, rarely developed, usually missing. Cells nearly isodiametric or up to 2x shorter than wide, (2) 2.5-5.6 (6.2) μm long; cell content finely granulated, or sometimes with large cyanophycin granules. Apical cells obtuse-conical, rounded-conical or acutely-rounded, not capitate, without calyptra or thickened outer cell wall. Several subspecific taxa (Oscillatoria formosa var. major Lemmermann 1908, f. edaphica Novickova 1960 (fig. 603), var. acutior Woodhead et Tweed 1959) represent probably separate species.  [details]

Distribution Periphytic and benthic in stagnant waters, pools, lakes, also in brackish and salty waters (?), sewage polluted waters; data from thermal springs, moist cliffs and mineral (especially sulphur) springs must be revised; common, distributed worldwide.  [details]
