Identification Variability is wide in cultures (loosening of trichome coiling). Position of akinetes is stable in nature, in culture anomalies have been observed. In nature there are differences mainly in length and length: width ratio of vegetative cells; Komarkova (1988) described two varieties/forms according to length of cells (var. lemmermannii with cells 4-12.3 x 3.1-4.7 μm, and var. minor (Utermohl) Komarkova with cells 2.9¬9.1 x 2.9-9 μm). According to sequencing of 16S rRNA gene, D. lemmermannii (sub Anabaena lemmermannii) is diversified also at the molecular level (Gugger & al. 2002a, 2002b). [details]

Description Trichomes free-floating, rarely solitary (or in fragments), often entangled in dense clumps (up to 1.6 cm in diameter), irregularly coiled, constricted at the cross-walls, not attenuated towards ends. Cells barrel-shaped, isodiametric up to twice as long than wide, blue-green, 2.5-10 (12.2) x (2.5) 4-6.9 (7) μm; apical cells of the same shape and size as other vegetative cells, rounded. Heterocytes spherical to slightly elongated and oval, intercalary, solitary, (3.5) 5.8-7.9 (10.9) x (3.5) 5-6 (8.5) μm. Akinetes intercalary, develop singly on both sides of heterocytes (rarely in pairs), oval-cylindrical to kidney-shaped (slightly curved), (13) 15-20 (30) x (6.3) 7.9-11 (13.3?) μm, with smooth, colourless exospore; groups (ir¬regular clusters) of aggregated akinetes (with heterocytes) occur often in centre of entangled trichome clusters and at the end of growing periods, after disintegration of vegetative cells, they can float in the plankton for short periods. [details]

Identification Variability is wide in cultures (loosening of trichome coiling). Position of akinetes is stable in nature, in culture anomalies have been observed.
