Harmful effect Mass mortality of ~50,000 cage-cultured fish took place in February 2014 in the West Johor Strait, Malaysia during a bloom of K. australe (0.3-2.3 million cells per litre). Effects on the fish similar to symptoms known to be caused by karlotoxin and the fishkill therefore attributed to K. australe, which comprised 69-99 % of the phytoplankton. Toxicity not reported from elsewhere. [details]
