Description Colonies free floating, microscopic, packet-like, more or less rounded or cubic-rounded, clearly three-dimensional, later macroscopic (to 3100 μm long), composed of packet-like subcolonies, irregularly spherical or elongate, with densely aggregated cells. Mucilage colourless, more or less narrow or slightly distant from cell clusters (more or less copying the margin of cell groups) and delimited by slightly refractive outline, usually 5 - (10) μm wide; mucilage never forms a wide spherical margin around cell clusters. Cells spherical, with aerotopes, (3) 3.5-7 (7.9-8.4 ?) μm in diameter. Well characterized species morphologically as well as according to isozyme composition. Occurs in two (or more) size modifications. Toxic.
