Description Small-sized cells (10–26 μm long, 10–22 μm wide), slightly flattened dorso-ventrally. Epicone hemispherical to broadly conical. Hypocone rounded. Cingulum median, displaced more than 1/5 of the cell length. Sulcus invading the epicone as a small finger-like extension. Several chloroplasts yellow-green to yellowish brown in colour, and irregular in shape. Nucleus spherical to ovoid, centrally to posteriorly located. Apical groove extending 1/3–1/2 down the dorsal side of the epicone (Yang et al., 2000). [details]
Identification Karenia digitata is very similar to Karlodinium decipiens de Salas et Laza-Martínez although the ventral pore is missing (de Salas et al., 2008). [details]
