The Permian Akasaka Limestone in central Japan is newly biostratigraphically divided into seven fusuline zones in ascending order : Parafusulina nakamigawai Zone (Pna) in the upper Kungurian, Cancellina nipponica Zone (Cni) in the lower Roadian, Neoschwagerina simplex Zone (Nsi) in the upper Roadian, Neoschwagerina craticulifera Zone (Ncr) in the lower Wordian, Neoschwagerina colaniae Zone (Nco) in the upper Wordian, Yabeina globosa Zone (Ygl) in the Capitanian, and Nanlingella suzukii Zone (Nan) in the Wuchiapingian. Fusuline biostratigraphy was established on the basis of detailed stratigraphic distribution of every species in many stratigraphic sections of the limestone. Systematically described are 63 species assignable to 26 genera and six families (Ozawainellidae, Staffellidae, Schubertellidae, Schwagerinidae, Verbeekinidae, and Neoschwagerinidae). Some of them are well-known internationally and paleobiogeographically important taxa. Taxonomic comments and emended diagnoses for the known genera and species are given. A lot of microphotographs of fusulines are presented so that broad morphologic variation of species can be easily understood visually, and they can be compared with the species previously proposed and described in the Akasaka Limestone and with the contemporaneous faunas. New species described herein are Nankinella akasakensis, Schubertella ovalis, Parafusulina tomowoozawai, Parafusulina yoshiakiozawai, and Cancellina postnipponica.
