Status Mortensen (1943: footnote on p. 198-199) remarks that: "It is very questionable wether Lamarck's Echinus neglectus is actually synonymous with Str[ongylocentrotus] drobachiensis, as it is generally assumed to be. Lamark's specimen came from "La Manche, près de St. Brieux"; but Str[ongylocentrotus] drobachiensis does not fo farther South than the Dogger Bank in the North Sea, and does not occur on the W. or S. coasts of the British Isles. Thus, if Lamarck's specimen really came from the locality he gives, it cannot have been Str[ongylocentrotus] drobachiensis, but was probably Sphaerechinus granularis. The diagnosis given by Lamarck is not decisive, but the "spinis albidus" fits well with the white-spined specimens of Sph[aerechinus] granularis, but not with Str[ongylocentrotus] drobachiensis or any other littoral Echinoid from the northern coast of France." [details]
