The subgenus Encope (Encope) became necessary due to Phelan’s (1972) proposal of a subgeneric classification of Encope into forms with continuous (Encope (Encope) vs. fully disjunct interambulacrum 5 (Encope (Echinadesma)). Smith & Kroh (2011) synonymized the two subgenera because all intermediate states between a continuous and fully disjunct interambulacrum 5 exist making a clear-cut separation impossible. Recently, Coppard & Lessios (2017) showed that Phelan's subdivision of the genus Encope is not supported by molecular data either.
