Because female Diaptomus leptopus carry subitaneous clutches longer than resting clutches, resting eggs can be produced at faster rates. Regression analysis of carrying times for 320 clutches produced at temperatures ranging from 12 to 24 °C indicated a consistent rate differential of 41%. This may facilitate colonization of the benthos by normally planktonic populations if pelagic conditions deteriorate.Key words: Copepoda. Diaptomus, reproduction, resting eggs, diapause, temperature effects
