Holotype "Name based primarily, if not solely, on Peron's manuscript account submitted to Lacépède. The type was observed Jan. 11, 1802, south of Tasmania. According to Gray (1846, Zoology of the voyage of H.M.S. Erebus and Terror, 1(Mammalia):36), the skull is in the Paris museum. This skull may or may not be the type." (Hershkovitz, 1966). The skull was not mentioned in Robineau's (1990) account of type specimens in the Paris museum. [details]
