Taxonomy This may prove to be an unaccepted taxon. There are no diagnostic morphological characters, and the molecular analyses are weak. The series was compared only to Australian series of bottlenose dolphins, and cranial measurements overlapped in all cases, even with the small samples examined. The mtDNA contral region was used but it has been shown to be ineffective in species phylogeny, and the nodes in the cytochrome b analysis were only weakly supported. STRUCTURE is also an inappropriate analysis at the supraspecific level. Average differences and clustering in multivariate analyses were taken to indicate species-level difference, not in accord with conventional morphologically-based systematics. [details]
