Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorHarmful effect The first report of anatoxin-a in cyanobacteria goes back to 1975, in material of D. flosaquae from Canada (Carmichael et al. 1975). The structure of the toxin was clarified two years later by Devlin et al. (1977). In a study from Finland, the toxin was found as well in the cells as in the medium, during the exponential and stationary growth phases (Rapala et al. 1993). Non-toxic strains also exist (Finland: Rapala et al. 1993) [details]
