Description Colonies free floating, more or less spherical, with cells irregularly and very densely aggregated in mucilaginous, spherical groups. Mucilage around colonies wide, gelatinous, fine, colourless, sometimes indistinct but structured, enveloping clusters of cells and extending distinctly beyond their margin, usually by more than 1 μm, later diffluent; in the colonial mucilage occur indistinct (staining, phase contrast !), more or less wide, radially oriented semiglobose or tubular gelatinous protuberances, sometimes connecting the subcolonies. Cells spherical, with aerotopes, 5-6 μm in diameter.  [details]
