Classification Xylophagidae has often been treated as a subfamily of Pholadidae but Distel et al. (2011) showed it is more closely related to Teredinidae than to Pholadidae and Coan & Valentich-Scott (2012) treated it as a full family. [details]
Nomenclature Turner (in Moore, ed., 1969: 721) suggested to emend the name of the (sub)family to Xylophaga-inae / -idae in order to avoid homonymy with the family name Xylophagidae Fallén, 1810 (based on Xylophagus Meigen, 1803 [Diptera]. However, under ICZN Art. 55.3.1, a change in spelling can be done only by the Commission, which has to be petitioned to amend the spelling of the bivalve name. [details]
