Importance This species, due to decreased hunting pressure, has been increasing in numbers. Fishers have concerns as to this affecting recovering cod stocks. [details]

Morphology Distinguishing characteristics: adult is white with dark "harp" on back, dark face. Pup is white "whitecoat", moults to grey coat with dark spots "beaters" within three weeks. Immatures (14 months+) called "bedlamers". [details]

Reproduction Pupping: February to mid March on pack ice (Gulf of St. Lawrence); Weaning: 10 days [details]
