Remark As remarked in Hotchkiss & Clark (1976: 266, footnote), the earlier family name Asteropsidae, used once by Perrier (1884: 154) is invalidated by his mistaken concept of the genus Asteropsis Muller & Troschel, 1842, omitting the type species, Asterias carinifera Lamarck, 1816. The transfer of Valvaster to this family by Blake (1980) means that the name Valvasteridae Viguier, 1878 should take precedence over Asteropseidae but there is a good case for the ICZN to set aside this priority to avoid further confusion.
