Taxonomy According to A.M. Clark (1993: 229): Cheilaster is thought to be a synonym of Marginaster by Mortensen (1927) since Ludwig (1897) synonymized the type species with Marginaster (1927) since Ludwig (1897) synonymized the type species with Marginaster capreensis (Gasco, 1876). However M. fimbriatus is more likely a synonym of Chondraster grandis (Verrill, 1878) according to A.M. Clark (1984) so Cheilaster is synonymous with Chondraster Verrill, 1895, which it antedates, accordingly needing suppression by the ICZN. [details]
