alien species The marine splash midge Telmatogeton japonicus originally occurs in Australasia and along the east coast of America. This species reached Europe through transportation in ballast water of ships. It was observed for the first time in Belgian waters in 2005, on buoys in front of the coast. Apparently these chironomids (and their larvae) survive on such metal ‘islands’ at sea. The species can be found in our neighbouring countries under the same conditions. [details]
