Nomenclature d'Orbigny (1847) originally spelled the genus "Megathiris", the next year Bronn (1848) spelled the name Megathyris, but it is unclear if this was a misspelling or an emendation. Thomson (1927, p. 213) states "d'Orbigny spelt his generic name Megathiris, but Bronn's correction to Megathyris has been generally adopted as a more correct transcription of the Greek". However, such a change is not consistent with the ICZN, and the original spelling is correct. [details]
