Homonymy Guettard's (1770) usage is a possible senior homonym to Penicillus Bruguière 1789 in Mollusca. Unlikely to have been used as valid after 1899, thus a nomen oblitum? (further clarification pending). Appears to derive from pre-Linnaean Penicillus Rondelet (q.v) [details]

Nomenclature Guettard (1770:59) describes genus Penicillus based on two prior workers - Mazeas (probably the senior Maseas = L'abbé Guillaume Mazéas (1720-1775) ) and Ellis. Ellis's work is pre-Linnaean, and probably Mazeas's is also (source untraced but Guettard refers to "Mém. des Sçavants Etrang.". Guettard then defines three categories of "Pinceau" (tube), and assigns prior usages to them. He largely doesn't use binominals, but includes Penicillus marinus but does not attribute it to Rondelet. It is debatable if Guettard's work here is consistent with article 11.4 (usage of binominals), or constitutes an available use of 'Penicillus' as a genus name. However, Neave lists the name in Nomenclator Zoologicus, and Sherborn attributes several genera, including Penicillus, to Guettard. Some of these are used as available names in WoRMS. No Guettard names appear to be listed in the ICZN Official Lists and Indexes of Zoological Names. [G Read, May 2016] [details]
