Diagnosis Pettibone (1985) does not provide an analysis of what is unique for Branchinotogluminae. She has a long text of 'general characteristics' and the following statement in a key of the branchiae-bearing polynoids. It appears that presence of branchiae and notopodial bracts are salient features.

"Bilobed prostomium with filiform frontal filaments; median antenna with distinct ceratophore in anterior notch. Elytra large, covering dorsum. Elytrophores prominent, bulbous; dorsal tubercles inflated, indistinct or elongate, tapered. Parapodia biramous, both rami with projecting acicular processes. Notopodia with prominent notopodial bracts on elytrigerous segment 2 or on all elytrigerous segments. Notosetae numerous, stout, acicular. Arborescent branchiae beginning on segment 3, compact, with short terminal filaments. Paired palps, tentacular, buccal and dorsal cirri all long. Pharynx with 5 papillae: 3 dorsal and 2 ventral; 2 pairs of jaws minutely denticled" [details]
