Description Protodrilus huanghaiensis sp. nov.The worms live in rather coarse sand, at about half-level of the intertidal zone. They are very small, 4 to 5 mm long. A pair of cephalic tentacles. The sensory cilia on the tentacles are well developed. The prostomium is obtuse and carries a stiff cilia at its anterior end. The nuchal organs, situated just behind the base of the tentacles, are in the form of conspicuous linear depressions with bunches of long cilia. Eyes are present. The statocysts, forming two conspicuous circular areas, occur on the margin of the prostomium, farther from the median line. The bacillary glands are distributed over the whole epidermis. The glands are distinctly thick, most of them being pear-shaped.The salivary glands extend at least into the 10th segment. There are two pairs of sperm-ducts in segments 4 and 5 .The spawning season of Protodrilus huanghaiensis sp. nov. in Tsingtao is in June and July when the temperature of sea water is between 20-23?. Metatrophore larvae collected by means of plankton net were reared in the laboratory to complete their metamorphosis. As a result of which we are able to identify the species, Protodrilus huanghaiensis sp. nov. Larval settlement under laboratory conditions took 40 days. Type specimen; The Holotype (No. A-45) and paratypes (No. A-46) are deposited in the Institute of Oceanology, Academia Sinica, Tsingtao, China. Type locality: Yellow Sea (Tsingtao).
