Etymology The name of the species was derived from Latin splendidus, shining, lustrous, and referred to the yellow pigment and the lack of red pigments:
"Die Skalidengegend ist durch das völlige Fehlen von roten Pigmentkörnchen ausgezeichnet. Die alleinige Herrschaft von goldgelbem Farbstoff am Kopfe, in der Haut und im Darm gibt dem Thier ein bezeichnendes Aussehen." = The area of the scalids is marked by the total lack of red pigment granules. The exclusive dominion of yellow pigment in the head, skin and gut provides the animal with the name-giving appearance. [details]
