Taxonomy It is unclear what the status is of Stelligera furcata Gray, 1867. Perhaps Gray intended this to replace Raspailia stelligera Schmidt, 1862, since he concluded that this was not a Raspailia. Fact is, that both names have been quoted under the definition of Stelligera, but no separate description of furcata was given by Gray. Subsequent authors have indicated Raspailia stelligera as the type species. This is generally assumed to be a junior synonym of Spongia stuposa Montagu, 1818. [details]
