(2000), based on sequences of the CO1 gene, considered the North European Hydrobia joosei as a geographical subspecies of the Mediterranean H. acuta; in this context a trinominal nomenclature is used. This is a puzzling distribution since the extensive coastline between the southern entrance of the English channel and the strait of Gibraltar is occupied by a different species H. glyca (Servain, 1880) [details]
