Taxonomy This genus and species was omitted from the Systema Porifera (and from previous overviews of the Halichondriidae). It was considered incertae sedis by Vosmaer (1935) and de Laubenfels (1936), but Topsent (1938) redescribed the type specimen and demonstrated that it is very likely a halichondrid. The properties of the type species remind strongly of the genus Spongosorites, but species of that genus usually have size classes of spicules, absent from Sarcomella medusa. It is possibly close or congeneric with the suberitid genus Pseudospongosorites. The genus and species were not recently recognized in the Mediterranean sponge fauna. [details]
